Outreach

Saint John's Outreach Ministries
Outreach at Saint John's is an obvious—and not so obvious response—to the healing power of the Gospel.

It is obvious in our public manifestations of serving others who are in need. Saint John's contributes time, treasure and talent to many local organizations, who in turn make vital contributions to the social and economic welfare of our community.

It is not so obvious in the numerous quiet ways our parishioners come to the assistance of others outside the parish—by directing their unique gifts and talents in ways that help channel the grace of God in many powerful ways.

Saint John's works to make a difference in the community of Memphis:

Literacy/Writing Workshop: Come and help make a difference in the lives of young women in the Beltline neighborhood. Contact Emma Connolly for more information emma@stjohnsmemphis.org.
Food Pantry Sunday: The first Sunday of each month is "Food Pantry Sunday" at Saint John's. Parishioners bring non-perishable items which are delivered to nearby St. Luke Methodist Church to be distributed or used in their soup kitchen program. Especially needed now are canned meats, dinner mixes, and personal hygiene items.  Bring your donations to St. John's on the First Sunday of each month. Volunteers from Saint John's also take an active role in serving at the soup kitchen. http://www.stlukesumc.org
Orange Mound Housing Rehab:  Teams are being organized now for an on-going housing rehab project in the Orange Mound Community.  Saint John's has had a long-term relationship with the folks in Orange Mound.  This house will be repaired and readied to sell to a deserving family to help stabilize this neighborhood. Can you help one Friday each month for a half day?  Contact Emma emma@stjohnsmemphis.org.
Planting Faith, Inc.  Parishioners Anne and Horace Tipton are missioners in Kenya helping farmers become self-sufficient.  We are planning a mission team to go over and help.  Contact the church if you are interested, but in the meanwhile click here to see more..
The Hospitality Hub:  A weekday "one stop shop" for those who find themselves on the streets of Memphis with no place to lay their head, no job, etc. Case workers assist clients in contacting loved ones, finding housing, obtaining IDs, job searches, and whatever it takes to stabilize their lives.  Full training is offered regularly in case management.  You may work once a month, half days - however you can work it out to help.  Also, save those travel-size items! Cindi Marshall picks these up from the bin by the elevator here at St. John's and takes these down to "The Hub" - razors, shampoo, soap, etc.
Creative Non-fiction Class for Women:  Are you interested in writing about your life, your travels, or how events relate to your spiritual journey? You will learn how to express yourself in new and vital ways that will not only help meet a personal need, but will deepen your spiritual life as well. Those interested should contact The Rev. Emma Connolly, 323-8597, Ext. 12, or emma@stjohnsmemphis.org. This class is held in the Beltline Community Enrichment Center, and includes women ages 14 up who live in the Beltline neighborhood.
Salvation Army Bell Ringers:  During December . . . Do you feel the call to man the red kettle at Kroger Poplar Plaza? Come and help - contact John Peeplesjohnsusanpeeples@yahoo.com.
Bicycles Needed:  Do you have a bike you are not using and want to give it a good home? Revolutions, the bike shop at First Congregational, is teaching several Beltline teenagers the art of Bicycle Repair and Maintenance.  They will get to keep the bicycles they repair.  Contact Emma emma@sjohnsmemphis.org if you have a bike to donate.
Alternative Giving:  Stop!  Don't by another gift until you see our Alternative Giving options during the Holidays.  Again this year, we are helping Planting Faith Ministries, Inc., in their work in Kenya assisting Kenyan farmers to become self-sufficient.  See tables at the Elevator Lobby and the Tower Room. www.plantingfaith.org
MIFA Estival Place Christmas Dinner:  Each December Saint John's hosts the families who reside in MIFA's Estival Place housing.  We prepare and serve a wonderful Christmas dinner, then Santa comes and gifts are distributed to all.  Can you help serve?  Contact Cindi Marshall, cindimarshall@me.com.
Saint John's Parish Life Center
In addition to housing our Recreation, Fitness & Sports ministries, our Parish Life Center is also a living symbol of Outreach. It provides shelter, comfort and hospitality for many, sojourners from afar as well as well as local individuals and groups. This beautiful facility with fitness room, elevated walking track and basketball court is open to the public at no charge. Hours of operation are 6:00am - 9:00pm M-F and 10:00am - 2:00pm Saturdays. The Memphis Boychoir
Our long-running sponsorship of The Memphis Boychoir represents a large investment of time, energy and resources for Saint John's. The group is not only widely acclaimed for its ability to leave audiences breathless, but also for its ability to offer boys from varying circumstances a safe place for growth, teamwork and transformation, in a Christ-centered environment. The Memphis Chamber Choir (pictured with the boys below) is their companion ensemble. The groups combine to present evensongs and concerts throughout each school year. www.memphisboychoir.org
